I'm a truly blessed man. Sure, I've dealt with my fair share of tough times, personal loss, defeats, failures and disappointments. But I've also been given a beautiful life that must not be taken for granted. I have to remind myself of that daily!
I'm sure you can apply this to your own life. Think of the 5 things that make you happy, that fill you up and overflow your cup of gratefulness. Think of things that make you smile, give you joy and get you jumping out of bed in the morning. If you're me, that could be a crying 3 year old :-) LOL
But seriously, on a day like Thanksgiving here in the United States of America, we celebrate how fortunate we are to have friends, family, neighbors, a roof over our heads and food to eat.
This 400 year old tradition is based on Pilgrims and Native Americans sitting together enjoying a successful harvest. It has certainly gone through its changes over the centuries but I like to think of it like Abraham Lincoln...
During his presidency in 1863 is when Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving become a federal holiday. This was during the American Civil War. Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens."
So I'll take it a step further...one nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. That's some of the Pledge of Allegiance that was also created during this time in our nation's history.
Yes, we are one nation with very different experiences and belief systems. But we are all Americans. On this day we can and should come together as the Pilgrims and Native Americans and reflect on how blessed we are to be here in this country, enjoying our freedoms, our friends, family, homes, foods, careers and the list goes on...
Your list of 5 things may look very different from mine. These are the ones that jumped out for me. Reflection about what we hold most dear is a necessary part of life. I just wish we did this more often. I wish it didn't always require the Holiday Season to make us aware of everything we are Thankful for.
